County of Wellington Ward 2 candidate Earl Campbell.

EloraFergusToday asked candidates in the upcoming municipal election to tell us a little bit about themselves and their platform.

Name: Earl Campbell

Occupation: Retired from management in the recycling industry. Although I am retired, I continue to be an active volunteer within the community.

How long have you lived in Mapleton? I have been a resident of Mapleton for 51 years.

Why are you running in this election? I am running in this election, because I have the time and the interest in continuing to serve the residents of Mapleton and Wellington County. I believe I have demonstrated good leadership and commitment in my roles as a member of  councils at the local level (Mapleton) and at the  county level (Mapleton Ward 2).

What qualifies you to represent Mapleton? My qualifications to represent Mapleton include raising my family with my wife in the Township of Mapleton, serving as a member of councils (local and County), extensive community service work and involvement, as well as personal work experience.

My experience includes.

  • Wellington County Councillor Ward 2

4 years

  • Councillor - Township of Mapleton / Maryborough Township

12 years

  • Volunteer Firefighter - Mapleton Fire Department

39 years

  • President - Maryborough Housing Corporation

6 Years

  • President & member - Palmerston and District Hospital Foundation

13 years

  • Secretary Treasurer - Elmira Developmental Support Corporation
  • 8 years
  • Past Member of the Drayton Kinsmen, Moorefield Optimist and Board of Directors member for the Elmira and District Community Living

Why should people vote for you? People need to exercise their right to vote and engage in the political process. I have the experience and the desire to continue to represent the needs of the residents of Mapleton.

What do you see as the main issues facing residents of Mapleton on a broader scale? On a broader scale, I see as one main issue facing the residents of Mapleton has an aging population which will require more housing options tailored to their needs if they are to age in place. We also need to support more employment opportunities and services for youth, to allow our young families and youth the opportunity prosper in the Township.

What is the most important thing you want to see changed in Mapleton? We need to develop more employment opportunities in Mapleton Township. This will require a larger allocation of Industrial / commercial lands and the encouragement of on farm secondary business’s.

What services need to be improved in Mapleton? Services that need to be improved in Mapleton include additional licensed childcare facilities. Mapleton is one of two municipalities in Wellington County that do not have licensed childcare facilities and this needs to be a priority at both the local and county level.

Is Mapleton growing too fast, just the right amount, or not fast enough? To me this is a two-part question. The residential expansion in Mapleton is on progressive stable curve which is the right amount. The industrial commercial growth should be accelerated by the creation of more lands and development opportunities.

What can be done at the local level about the rising cost of housing? At the local level the approval of multi unit higher density housing needs to be a focus. This would reduce the land cost per housing unit.

How would you support the effort to bring licensed child care to Mapleton? I have supported the opening of three licenced childcare facilities within Wellington County during this term of county council as well as the EarlyOn center in Drayton. I would support the proposal for one in Mapleton once it is presented.

How do we make Mapleton an even better place to live? Mapleton is already a great place to live. To improve this, we need to get our community more engaged in volunteerism. To Quote Muhammad Ali “Service to others is the rent you pay for your room on Earth “
