LETTER: Hold corporations accountable for their commitments

'Seems like Wellington Motor Freight is trying to ram their trucking hub down our throats, after all,' writes reader Caroline Mochetta.

The room at the Puslinch Community Centre was full of residents looking to speak on an application to build a trucking company headquarters in Aberfoyle.

EloraFergusToday received the following letter regarding the recent open house in Puslinch on Wellington Motor Freight's zoning application.

I am writing to bring to light the concerning actions of Wellington Motor Freight, a corporation that is attempting to backtrack on a public statement made during a Public Information Meeting on March 22 of this year.

On March 22, 2023 the spokesperson for Wellington Motor Freight made the public statement, “Through this process if it turns out that it’s not the right facility we’re not going to ram this down your throats. To be honest we want to be welcomed here.” This statement can be verified at the 1:14:00 mark of the YouTube link from the meeting on March 22 posted on the Puslinch Township website.

Wellington Motor Freight has applied to rezone 128 Brock Rd. S., a property located at the corner of Brock Rd. S. and Gilmour Rd. in Aberfoyle, which is directly adjacent to a residential community.

The proposed facility has met with almost unanimous opposition from those attending the meeting on April 18. When directly questioned by several residents about whether the company would keep its word, the response from the company was evasive, avoiding a direct answer. The company in the end is deferring the decision to the township.

Seems like Wellington Motor Freight is trying to ram their trucking hub down our throats, after all.

As members of the community, we are concerned about the attempt by Wellington Motor Freight to backtrack on its public statements. It is critical that corporations be held accountable for commitments; especially with it comes to the impact on local communities.

We are requesting that Wellington Motor Freight keep their word and find an alternative location that is already zoned Industrial for their new headquarters.
