MAPLETON – In an effort to increase community safety, Mapleton council will consider approving a staff report that would see speed limits set at 40 km/hr in all its urban areas.

A report being considered at a meeting on Tuesday stated the current speed limit is set at 50 km/hr in urban zones.

“There are five elementary schools located within the urbanized areas of Mapleton township, which generally generate significant pedestrian activity in themselves,” the report said. “With the current and anticipated further growth of the township with respect to population it is important that council act to ensure the safety of its residents.”

The urban areas that would be impacted by this change noted in the report are: Drayton, Moorefield, Alma, Rothsay, Hollen, Lebanon, Glen Allan, Yatton and Wallenstein.

In 2021, council passed a bylaw reducing speed limits in rural areas fronting schools and parks to 60 km/hr down from 80 km/hr.

“This report reinforces Mapleton township council’s desire to further increase safety for pedestrians within the township,” the report stated.
