ELORA – A Centre Wellington business owner is warning other business owners to keep an eye out and protect themselves after a break-in saw a window smashed and register taken.

Man Vo, owner of Market Pantry on Wellington Road 7 in the plaza as you enter Elora, said in a phone call the business was broken into last night or early this morning, delaying the opening of the store on Friday.

A front window of the business was “smashed pretty good” and Vo said their point-of-sale register was stolen but he was aware of some break-ins to cars in the area as well.

“Thankfully there was no staff here right? So no one got hurt,” Vo said.

Vo owns other businesses in Fergus and called this moment a wake-up call as this is the first time he’s had a break-in. He noted he will be making some changes at those businesses based on what’s happened.

“It’s crazy what’s going on right now,” Vo said in reference to an armed robbery of a store in Fergus days prior where two people with handguns allegedly made off with $20,000 worth of cell phones. “I think people are just getting desperate now.”

Although the window will be the responsibility of the owner, Vo made a rough estimate of about $5,000 in losses and damages because of this incident.

They haven’t been able to pull footage but the businesses in the area do have cameras.

Police had been there earlier and are investigating.

No Wellington OPP media officer was available on Friday to respond to questions about this incident.

Market Pantry was moving forward with opening later in the morning.
