Faster internet service may be on the way to some Wellington County communities and others, thanks to in provincial government funding for a local service provider.

In a Thursday morning news release, the government said it has signed agreements with eight service providers across the province, collectively worth about $1.25 billion, to deliver high-speed internet to up to 266,000 unserved and underserved homes and businesses.

Among those providers is Xplornet Communications, which services Mapleton, Minto and Wellington North, as well as others outside the area, and received $240 million to assist up to 54,679 customers by 2025,

Service providers were selected through a two-stage competitive process, the release states.

“This competitive process is the first of its kind in Canada and has led to an unprecedented market response and commitment to deliver high-speed internet connections to communities that have been left underserved until now,” said Michael Lindsay, president and CEO of Infrastructure Ontario, in the release.
