MINTO – The Town of Minto council has approved its 2023 budget at a 4.88 per cent tax increase.
Minto council approved the budget as presented at its Tuesday evening meeting.
This represents about a $24.36 increase on the township portion of the tax bill for the average assessed home. In total, the net budget increase in 2023 is $281,200, bringing the tax supported operating budget to just over $6 million
This is a larger increase than seen in recent years with the past increases at 1.5 and 0.85 in 2020 and 2021 respectively.
The 2023 capital budget totals $4.1 million with almost half of that dedicated towards public works projects. At the meeting, treasurer Gordon Duff said the town’s infrastructure deficit is unfortunately growing.
“We just don’t have the resources to do all the projects and we’re not alone. I don’t think there’s any municipality in Ontario that’s doing everything they’d like,” Duff said. “I think it’s a reasonable blend of taking care of priorities and being fiscally responsible.”
The township’s portion of the tax bill represents one part of three on a Wellington County residents’ total tax bill, with taxes also going to the County of Wellington and to education.
