There is no timeline for when remediation work will finish at a fenced-off property in the middle of Fergus, but the property owner says work continues.
The property at 390 St. David St. N, between Hill Street and St. George Street, is owned by Suncor Energy and was formerly a gas station for nearly half a century.
Mita Adesanya, a spokesperson for Suncor, said via email the gas station operated from 1956 to 2002 but was fenced off in 2014.
“We are currently working through an approved remedial process,” Adesanya said.
“This process, which is approved by the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, can take up to three years to complete.”
No timeline on when this work will be completed was given but the spokesperson said they have completed initial phases of remediation and will provide reports to the township and ministry throughout the process.
“Following the completion of the remediation process we will look to sell the property,” Adesanya said.
Centre Wellington CAO Andrew Goldie said no report was currently available but confirmed it is considered a priority site under the Community Improvement Plan.
Priority sites are lands that fall under some or all of the following criteria:
- The site has frontage along the Grand River
- The site is a known brownfield property
- A building on the site has significant heritage value
- The site is vacant or underutilized and has potential for significant development/redevelopment
- The site is subject to a proposal that will help achieve targets and policies related to population and employment growth
This designation means additional financial incentives are available for the property.
