FERGUS – Two people were taken to hospital with injuries following a Sunday evening fire in a Fergus apartment.
Deputy fire chief Jonathan Karn said both stations responded to a fire in a bedroom on a third-floor apartment at a county-owned building on Gordon Street.
The call initially was for a fire alarm call around 8:30 p.m. but was upgraded when multiple 911 calls came in reporting the fire.
Karn said the building’s sprinkler system did its job suppressing the fire and potentially saved a life as a woman was still in the unit when they responded.
Two people were taken to Groves Hospital with injuries.
The cause of the fire is still being determined but Karn said it is not likely suspicious.
Karn said the damage would be mainly water from the sprinkler system, and fire and smoke in the unit, but structurally the building is fine.
The estimated cost of the damage is not yet known.
