WELLINGTON COUNTY – It’ll be a Wellington County face-off in Elora this Friday night as the defending champions of Western Ontario Super Hockey League (WOSHL) are up against a new team.

The Elora Rocks, WOSHL champions of the 2021-2022 inaugural season, are having their home opener on Friday night against the Erin Blitz.

The Blitz are one of four new teams joining the now nine-team league for its second season.

This will be the first regular season game for both teams.

Mitch Scott, Elora Rock’s general manager, said the team isn’t feeling pressure over being the returning champs.

“It’s more the excitement of being defending champs and trying to hold on to that,” Scott said. “It’s awesome to come to the arena with the group that we have.”

Scott said the team is more or less ready to go with a line-up featuring lots of returning players from the championship team but also a few new places.

“Our team is even more local this year than it was last year, with more players from Elora and Fergus on it,” Scott said.

Jeff Richards, Erin Blitz’s general manager, said they have also put together a strong and skilled team and they’re thrilled to debut the team.

“Everyone’s excited about the start, excited to play against the defending champs to see how we rate within the league,” Richards said.

“What better way to start than against the defending champs?”

A potential rivalry between the two Wellington County teams could be a good thing, according to Richardson, but he said we’ll have to see the intensity and fan reaction from the first game.

Scott also believed a rivalry could be a good thing for fans of both teams as the closeness of the two towns makes it easy to get out to away games.

The puck drops at the Elora Community Centre at 8:30 p.m. on Friday but Scott said there is a banner raising ceremony around 8:15 p.m. with a pre and post party in the banquet hall.

“It’s going to be a great night on Friday,” Scott said.

The Erin Blitz have their home opener on Oct. 15 at the Erin Centre 2000.
