ELORA – The Elora Rocks are down two games and its captain after a tough start to their league semifinal.

The Rocks lost both games played this weekend against the Stratford Fighting Irish in the Western Ontario Super Hockey League (WOSHL) semifinals.

The team is now down 2-0 in a best-of-seven series.

Stratford may have had the luck of the Irish on St. Patrick’s day, winning a close 3-2 game on Elora home ice Friday.

The Fighting Irish took the lead early with two goals first period with the Rocks responding with two of its own in the second period.

Stratford would end up scoring the winning goal on a powerplay in the third period.

On Saturday night, Stratford cruised to a 5-2 victory on home ice. The Fighting Irish scored five unanswered goals in the first and second period and Elora couldn’t catch up.

Elora Rocks captain Spencer Gourlay had to be rushed to hospital during Game 2 after taking an “awkward hit” which caused him to go in and out of consciousness, according to an Elora Rocks Facebook post.

The post said Gourlay has sustained a major concussion and is resting at home but will be out indefinitely.

The two teams will be back at it again this coming Friday and Saturday at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex and in Stratford respectively, with the chance for Stratford to move on to the finals.

If Elora can hang on, the series will finish the following weekend.
