Erin Olympian advances to women's freeski halfpipe finals

Rachael Karker placed second in the qualifying round Wednesday evening

BEIJING – Local Olympian Rachael Karker is in contention for an Olympic medal after placing second in a qualifying round.

Two clean runs in women’s freeski halfpipe qualifiers Wednesday evening EST — Thursday morning in China — for the 24-year-old from Erin put her through to the finals.

Karker scored high with an 88.5 and an 89.5 in her first and second run respectively. Skiers placement is based on whichever of their runs scores higher.

The top 12 scoring athletes out of 20 competing moved on.

Karker joins fellow Canadian freestyle skiers Cassie Sharpe and Amy Fraser in the finals.

China’s Eileen Gu was top of the leaderboard in this round, putting up a score of 95.5.
