OPP Roundup: Drivers without permits, kids without seatbelts

Rash of drivers under suspension, commercial vehicle violations, highlight week on roads

Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police had a busy week on the roads when it came to major traffic offences.

On March 9 at around noon, a member of the Wellington County OPP stopped the driver of a black sedan on Woodlawn Road West in Guelph. As a result of an investigation, a 23-year-old from Hamilton was charged with driving while under suspension, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act. The defendant is scheduled to appear in provincial offences court in Guelph on June 7.

On March 9 a member of the Wellington County OPP Traffic Management Unit was monitoring traffic on Wellington Road 7 in Centre Wellington. At around 12:30 p.m., the member initiated a commercial motor vehicle inspection of a brown tractor-trailer. As a result, 14 violations were discovered. A 47-year-old operator from Aylmer and a business from Aylmer face multiple Highway Traffic Act offences including driving a commercial motor vehicle with a major defect in it or in the drawn trailer, failure to accurately complete a daily inspection report, failure to ensure performance standards are met, and failure to provide the driver with a daily inspection schedule.

On March 9 at around 2:15 p.m., a member of the Wellington County OPP initiated a traffic stop of a white sedan on Jones Baseline in Centre Wellington. As a result, a 26-year-old driver from Mississauga was charged with driving while a passenger under 16 failed to properly wear a seatbelt.

On March 11 at around 10 a.m., a member of the Wellington County OPP stopped the driver of a silver hatchback on Young Street in Palmerston. After an investigation, an 18-year-old from Palmerston was charged with driving while under suspension and failing to surrender the permit for the motor vehicle, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act. The defendant is scheduled to appear in provincial offences court in Guelph on June 7.

On March 11 at 4:30 p.m., a member of the Wellington County OPP initiated a traffic stop of a grey SUV on Sideroad 18 in Centre Wellington. After an investigation, a 41-year-old from Fergus was charged with driving while having a child passenger who was not properly secured.

On March 11, a member of the Wellington County OPP was monitoring traffic on the Hanlon Expressway South, Guelph. At around 7:45 p.m., a grey SUV was observed travelling well above the posted 80 km/hr speed limit. After an investigation, a 17-year-old from Morriston was charged with speeding and stunt driving. The defendant is scheduled to appear in provincial offences court in Guelph on April 19.

On March 11 at around 10 p.m., a member of the Wellington County OPP stopped the driver of a grey coupe on Whitelaw Road in Guelph/Eramosa. After an investigation, a 21-year-old driver from Kitchener was charged with being a young driver with a blood alcohol concentration above zero.

On March 12 around 10 a.m., Wellington County OPP responded to a single vehicle collision on Second Line near Wellington Road 18 in Centre Wellington. It was reported a black sedan had entered the ditch. A 41-year-old from Fergus was charged with driving while under suspension and careless driving. The defendant is scheduled to appear in provincial offences court in Guelph on June 7.

On March 12 a member of the Wellington County OPP was monitoring traffic on Wellington Road 18 in Nichol. At around 5 p.m., a grey minivan was observed travelling well above the posted 60km/hr speed limit. As a result, an 18-year-old driver from Fergus has been charged with speeding and stunt driving. The defendant is scheduled to appear in provincial offences court in Guelph on June 7.

On March 12 a member of the Wellington County OPP was monitoring traffic on Wellington Road 17 in Mapleton. At around 7:45 p.m., a grey sedan was observed failing to slow down and proceed with caution for an emergency vehicle. A 23-year-old from Wallenstein was charged with failure to slow down and proceed with caution for an emergency vehicle or tow truck, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.

On March 13 a member of the Wellington County OPP was monitoring traffic on Tower Street South in Fergus. At around 8:30 a.m., a black sedan was observed committing a traffic offence. After an investigation, a 26-year-old from Elora was charged with disobeying a stop sign, failing to stop and driving while under suspension.

On March 13 a member of the Wellington County OPP Traffic Management Unit was monitoring traffic on Concession 7 in Puslinch. At around 2:45 p.m., the member initiated a commercial motor vehicle inspection of a red commercial vehicle. As a result of the investigation, a 51-year-old from Brampton, and a business from Brampton face multiple Highway Traffic Act offences including driving a commercial motor vehicle with a major defect in it or in the drawn trailer, improper tires, over weight on tires, and not having a currently validated permit.

On March 13 at approximately 4 p.m., a member of the Wellington County OPP initiated a traffic stop on a black hatchback on Eighth Line East in Pilkington. After an investigation, a 28-year-old from Fergus was charged with operating a motor vehicle without insurance, failing to apply for a permit on becoming owner and using plates not authorized for the vehicle. The defendant is scheduled to appear in provincial offences court in Guelph on June 7.

On March 13 at around 6:30 p.m., Wellington County OPP responded to a reported traffic complaint on Wellington Road 7 in Pilkington. It was reported a silver pickup truck was driving erratically. A 70-year-old from Kitchener was charged with driving while impaired and operation while impaired (blood alcohol level 80 plus), contrary to the Criminal Code. The accused is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Guelph on April 7.

On March 14 at around 12:45 p.m., a member of the Wellington County OPP stopped the driver of a black sedan on Gzowski Street in Fergus. After an investigation, a 23-year-old driver from Fergus was charged with driving while under suspension, driving with no currently validated permit and driving with no validation on the licence plate. The defendant is scheduled to appear in provincial offences court in Guelph on June 7.

On March 14 at approximately 5:30 p.m., Wellington County OPP responded to a multiple vehicle collision on Highway 89 in Wellington North. It was reported three vehicles had been involved and two people were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. As a result of an investigation, a 57-year-old from Cambridge was charged with driving while suspended. The defendant is scheduled to appear in provincial offences court in Guelph on June 7.

On March 15 at approximately 1:15 a.m., a member of the Wellington County OPP stopped the driver of a white sedan on Wellington Road 5 in Minto. After an investigation, a 21-year-old from Harriston was charged with driving while under suspension and failure to surrender permit for motor vehicle, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act. The defendant is scheduled to appear in provincial offences court in Guelph on June 7.

On March 15 at approximately 2:15 a.m., Wellington County OPP responded to a collision on Highway 89 in Minto. It was reported a black SUV had entered the ditch and the driver was not at the scene. After an investigation, a 26-year-old from Shelburne was charged with careless driving, failure to remain at the scene and failure to report an accident, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act. The defendant is scheduled to appear in provincial offences court in Guelph on June 7.

On March 15 at approximately 5:15 p.m., a member of the Wellington County OPP initiated a traffic stop on a brown sedan on Highway 6 in Nichol. After an investigation, a 25-year-old from Picton was charged with operating a motor vehicle without insurance and driving with no currently validated permit. The defendant is scheduled to appear in provincial offences court in Guelph on June 7.

On March 15, a member of the Wellington County OPP Traffic Management Unit was monitoring traffic on Wellington Road 18 in Pilkington. At approximately 3:30 p.m., the officer initiated a commercial motor vehicle inspection. As a result, a construction business from Elmira was charged with failure to supply the driver with a daily inspection schedule and failure to ensure a daily inspection is conducted properly, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.
