The first shipment of COVID-19 vaccines for kids under the age of five will arrive in Guelph this week.

Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health said they are working with physicians and pharmacies on a plan so children between six months and five-years-old will have access to the Moderna vaccine.

"I encourage every parent and caregiver to speak with their primary care provider or pharmacist to answer their vaccination questions – especially for children attending school or daycare this fall,” Dr. Nicola Mercer, the region's medical officer of health said in a news release.

"Each one of us must continue to protect ourselves, our loved ones and our community from COVID-19 by following public health measures – including getting vaccinated. I encourage everyone, regardless of age, to stay up to date with vaccinations."

Those looking to book an appointment can do so over the phone.

Public health said the online booking system will not be available for booking appointments for this newly eligible age group.

In the region, only primary care providers and select pharmacies will administer the vaccines.
