The Sanguen Community Health Van is looking for tents and camping gear in response to an expected increased and urgent need in the community.

'We are aware that a number of the people who were living in encampments and then received accommodations at shelter hotels may be without shelter at the end of the month when the funding for this support comes to an end," said Lindsay Sprague, director of community programs, via email.

"In the broader community, there is currently not enough adequate and accessible housing or storage available for people. Unfortunately, the shelter closure is occuring at the same time that the Royal City Mission must enforce program closures due to funding cuts. This will result in many people needing to access the emergency shelter and other services."

Gently used items are accepted, including:

  • Tents of all sizes
  • Tarps of all sizes
  • Sleeping bags
  • Sleeping pads
  • Emergency blankets
  • AA and AAA batteries
  • Tealights and candles
  • Flashlights and headlamps
  • Bungee cords and twine
  • Matches and lighters

Items can be dropped off at the Sanguen Guelph office, 176 Wyndham St. N., in the basement of the Guelph Community Health Centre or picked up if necessary by contacting Mik at 519-465-6589.

The van also has an Amazon wish list. Items can be delivered to the Guelph office at 176 Wyndham St. N.

"There are many legitimate reasons why individuals may choose not to rely on the existing shelter system, including personal and belongings safety, and keeping beloved pets with them.

"People may choose to live in encampments so they can be close to downtown resources, live with autonomy and keep their property safely with them," Sprague said.
