Many of the township's Airbnbs appear to be concentrated around Elora.

CENTRE WELLINGTON – Centre Wellington staff recommend bringing in outside help to develop regulations for Airbnbs in the township.

A report recommends council award a contract to complete the required consultation and other activities to support developing a license bylaw framework for short term rental accommodations to Maclaren Municipal Consulting Inc. at an upper limit of $74,900.

At a December meeting, council directed staff to pursue regulating short term rentals in Centre Wellington through a multi-step process.

This process would include an extensive public consultation process, the creation of an inventory of short term accommodation properties in Centre Wellington and using the information collected to draft a licensing bylaw and formulate a strategy, including financial implications, for regulation and enforcement.

At the time, a report showed there were about 251 short term rental properties and 217 unique rental units listed in Centre Wellington.

This recommendation will go forward for consideration at a Centre Wellington council meeting on Monday.
