ELORA - As part of increasing safety awareness on the Elora Cataract Trailway, the Elora Cataract Trailway Association will be giving away 200 free bike bells at three locations in Wellington County.

This Saturday the ECTA will be giving away 200 bike bells between 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. at the trailway parking lot on Beatty Line, in Fergus; at the trailway entrance on Gartshore Street across from Forfar Park in Fergus; and at the trailway parking lot in Hillsburgh.

“According to the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, every bicycle 'shall be equipped with an alarm bell, gong or horn, which shall be kept in good working order and sounded whenever it is reasonably necessary to notify pedestrians or others of its approach,'” stated Tom Skimson of the ECTA in a news release.

“Wellington County is fortunate to have many off road, multi-use trails where cyclists and pedestrians share the same trail surface. As spring and summer weather approaches, trail use increases. Cyclists are reminded to warn pedestrians of their approach by using their bell or horn, which is why ECTA will be giving away free bike bells.”
