GUELPH/ERAMOSA – Two Wellington County townships are going to have pay a little more year over year for its animal control services.

A report as part of a Guelph/Eramosa council agenda stated the Guelph Humane Society has been the animal control service provider for the township jointly with Centre Wellington for the past seven years.

This contract was set to expire June 30 and a request for proposal sent out by the two townships had one response – from Guelph Humane Society.

The total animal control and pound services for 18 months is just under $400,000 shared between the two townships.

Under the cost sharing agreement, Centre Wellington pays 68 per cent of the costs and Guelph/Eramosa pays 32 per cent.

The proposal submitted includes an increase of 11 per cent for the first year, maintaining the current level of service, and an incremental increase of 3.5 per cent every year going forward.

In the report, Guelph/Eramosa staff indicate this is a manageable increase and staff will look into options for offsetting this amount including an increase in dog licensing fees, which have not been increased since 2020. Therefore, staff there recommend Guelph/Eramosa council continue with Guelph Humane Society.

“It should be noted that the proposed increase is less than one per cent of the township’s operating budget and staff will continue to monitor costs to ensure they stay in line with approved amounts,” the report stated.

Centre Wellington council approved awarding the request for proposal to Guelph Humane Society at its last meeting on May 29.

This will be decided at Guelph/Eramosa’s Monday council meeting.
