TOWN OF MINTO

On Thursday, June 10, a video was posted to the TikTok social networking platform with disturbing references to the recent murder of the Afzaal and Salman family in London.

This video originated in Harriston, located within the Town of Minto, County of Wellington. In response to this horrific act of hate, members of the Minto Cultural Roundtable and concerned citizens, supported by the Town of Minto and Wellington County, have planned a Solidarity March to stand united against hate.

“We could not sit back and watch this disgusting attack on members of our community,” said Peggy Raftis, Minto Cultural Roundtable Chair. “Our community prides itself on being a place where all families belong. We condemn all racism and stand in support of our Muslim community.”

On Friday, County of Wellington Warden Kelly Linton and Minto Mayor George Bridge issued a joint statement condemning the video. “The anti-Muslim sentiment expressed in this disgusting video is abhorrent to the residents of Wellington County and the Town of Minto, and all efforts must be used to denounce hatred in all its forms. Islamophobia and all forms of racism have no place in our community, and we must ensure that messages of hate and fear fall on deaf ears.”

Those attending the march are encouraged to wear green and purple and bring a sign to show support.
