FERGUS – A local high school has raised a lot of money for a cancer charity.

Centre Wellington District High School (CWDHS) announced student and staff raised over $103,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society as part of Relay For Life. The school held its Relay For Life event on Friday.

Erik Gitter, CWDHS cooperative education teacher and Relay For Life organizer, in a phone call gave all credit to the dozen students who were part of the student organization committee.

“They are unbelievable leaders in the school, there hasn’t been a whole lot of leadership opportunities due to COVID and whatever other instances over the last couple of years so they took that leadership and they ran with it,” Gitter said.

“They were full of enthusiasm and they were selfless, they donated so much time to run the event and to hype the event so we could have the kind of success that we did.”

At the event on Friday, Gitter said at least one person per team would running on the track at the school at any given time for eight hours. Beyond activities like Zumba, yoga and Ultimate Frisbee, the event had appearances from cancer survivors and a speech from Jessica Hill, mother of Elora’s Addy Hill.

Gitter also noted local businesses were generous in helping fundraise and through what they donated as part of the event.

Final donations are still being tallied so Gitter expected the final amount to surpass $103,000.
