The first phase of the St. David Street construction has begun.

FERGUS – A busy Fergus street will soon close for nearly the entire remainder of the year for a full reconstruction project.

St. David Street North from St. Andrew Street West to Garafraxa Street will be closed to traffic starting on Monday with construction expected to last until mid-December.

This is for the first phase of the St. David Street North reconstruction project which will see new infrastructure such as watermains, sewers, asphalt and pavement replaced along with new traffic calming measures, intersection upgrades, a pedestrian crossing and bike lanes.

There will be 10 less on-street parking spaces as a result of this work.

The local detour directs drivers to use Belsyde Avenue, Gartshore Street and Gordon Street to get around the construction.

The regional detour route recommends drivers get on Wellington Road 7 at the Highway 6 turn off and get back to Highway 6 via Wellington Road 17 in Alma.
