MINTO – The Minto fire department is reminding residents to inspect their chimneys after a Sunday fire caused an estimated $200,000 in damage.

In a press release, Minto fire department reported responding to a chimney fire at a rural residence east of Harriston around 12:30 p.m. Sunday.

All occupants were out of the building and no injuries were reported.

Upon arrival, flames were venting out of second storey windows.

“The fire started in the wall of the chimney, and travelled into the attic making it difficult to suppress, especially during harsh winter conditions,” the press release stated.

Around 40 firefighters from all Minto stations with support from Wellington North fire battled the blaze.

The cause of the fire was deemed to be accidental.

Minto fire department has issued a reminder to residents to regularly clean and maintain their chimneys and fireplaces.
