CENTRE WELLINGTON – The township is looking to take another crack at a program to deal with the area’s termite issue with a specific product in mind.

A report going forward at Centre Wellington council’s Monday meeting recommends directing staff to enter into discussions with Toronto-based Aetna Pest Control to “determine potential scope of service provision, preferred pricing options, or other opportunities to effectively address termites in Centre Wellington.”

It also recommends giving staff the option to conduct a survey of the hundreds of property identified in a 2020 study as having active termite activity to determine the program’s viability based on the pest control vendor.

This would be the third vendor the township has approached to take on a township-wide termite management program. Two previous attempts by the township had ended up as unsuccessful due to reasons not revealed by the township or vendors.

The report said it is worth nothing since discussions began, Sentricon termite colony elimination system has been made available in the Canadian market and its parent company has identified two vendors licensed to use the product.

Sentricon, according to its website, is a bait system that spreads through and kills an entire termite colony including its queen.

“Use of a technology similar to the Sentricon product was a cornerstone to the proposed termite management program,” the report said. “However, with limited licensing of the product within the Canadian landscape, this had introduced complications to the proposed project scope, timelines, cost, and administration.”

Staff are recommending engaging with a supplier who uses Sentricon such as Aetna Pest Control which said on its website is Toronto's first Sentricon specialist.
