Elizabeth (Liz) Joan Louise Garrett, 74, of Fergus,Ontario, passed away peacefully at Wellington Terrace on September 30, 2023 after a long, heart-breaking period of physical and mental decline caused by dementia.

Liz was born on March 28, 1949 to Canon John and Winnifred Garrett in Cornwall, Ontario. Liz is survived by her children, Erin (Stewart), Mike (Fiona), and John (Helena). She was a proud grandmother to Owen, Finley, Clara, Galen, Aaron, Pearl, and Charlie. Liz is also survived by her four siblings, Mary (Gary), James (Bernice), Allison, and Clarke.

After growing up in the Ottawa Valley, Liz graduated from the University of Guelph in 1972 with a Bachelor’s degree in Family and Consumer Studies. Liz had a varied career that had a positive impact on so many people. She worked as a nutritionist at a Kingston hospital, taught fitness classes and supported elementary school children with speech and language development. She also held many volunteer positions to support her communities, creating impact wherever she lived. Liz was passionate about service to others in both her professional and personal life.

After retiring in 2009 from the Wellington Dufferin Board of Education, Liz moved to Midland to be with her partner and the love of her life, Mike Hamilton. They spent their time on the water on the Tempus Fugit, socializing with their friends and on their beloved annual trips to The Bahamas.

We are truly grateful to the staff at Wellington Terrace who cared for Liz and guided our family through management of a terrible disease for the last six years. We request that in lieu of flowers, please make donations in Liz’s name to either Wellington Terrace, or the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada The funeral will be held at St. James Anglican Church in Fergus, Ontario on Thursday October 5, 2023 at 11 am. If you are able to attend, we ask that you wear bright colours. That was Liz’s preference.

We will miss Liz greatly. She was beloved as a mom, sister, grandmother and friend.
