NEWS RELEASE
ONTARIO PROVINCIAL POLICE

The Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to remind the public that we all play a role in marine safety.

On Aug. 14, 2022, the Wellington County OPP Marine Unit was conducting patrols on Conestogo Lake. Officers stopped a vessel that had 11 people on board, six of whom were under the age of 16. However, there were only four personal flotation devices (PFDs), also known as life-jackets, on the vessel.

As a result of the investigation, the 15-year-old vessel operator from Milton is facing several charges under the Canada Shipping Act including operating a pleasure craft without copy of licence on board and operating a non-human powered pleasure craft without flotation device or life-jacket of appropriate size for each person on board.

The defendant is scheduled to appear in the provincial offences court - Guelph, at a later date.

The Wellington County OPP would like to take this opportunity to remind the public how important it is to wear a life-jacket when out on the water.
