16 drivers, 4 businesses in latest list of notable traffic offences

Wellington County OPP charged people with impaired driving, stunt driving, driving without insurance and other offences between April 13 and 19

Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to consolidate and streamline our notable traffic offences and publish a single weekly release.

On April 13, at approximately 12:15 p.m., a member of the Wellington County OPP stopped the driver of a black sedan on Brock Road South in Puslinch. As a result of the investigation, a 34-year-old driver from Hamilton was charged with driving while under suspension, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act (HTA). The defendant is scheduled to appear in provincial offences court in Guelph on July 19.

On April 14, at approximately 9:15 a.m., a member of the Wellington County OPP initiated a commercial motor vehicle inspection of a commercial pickup truck on Wellington Road 39, Guelph/Eramosa. As a result of the investigation, an Elora business faces HTA charges, including permit operation of the vehicle - failing to display inspection sticker of proof, and overweight vehicle - violating permit.

On April 14, at approximately 1:15 p.m., a member of the Wellington County OPP stopped the driver of a green sedan on Highway 23 in Minto. As a result of the investigation, a 54-year-old from Kitchener has been charged with operation while prohibited, contrary to the Criminal Code. The accused is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Guelph on June 6.

On April 14, at approximately 1:45 p.m., a member of the Wellington County OPP initiated a commercial motor vehicle inspection of a white dump truck on Maple Street in Fergus. As a result of the investigation, a 51-year-old Oakville driver faces numerous HTA charges, including operating an unsafe vehicle - commercial motor vehicle, failing to surrender a completed daily inspection report and failing to ensure the daily inspection report is accurately completed. The defendant is scheduled to appear in provincial offences court in Guelph on July 19.

On April 14, at approximately 4:30 p.m., a member of the Wellington County OPP initiated a commercial motor vehicle inspection of a blue commercial pickup truck on Wellington Road 19 in Centre Wellington. As a result of the investigation, a 55-year-old driver from Grand Valley and a Grand Valley business face HTA charges, including failing to surrender a completed daily inspection report and failing to surrender a completed daily inspection. In total, eight HTA offences were identified.

On April 14, Wellington County OPP initiated a Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) check on Victoria Road North in Guelph. At approximately 11:45 p.m., the driver of a black pickup truck entered the check. As a result of the investigation, a 28-year-old from Elora has been charged with operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (BAC) (80 plus), contrary to the Criminal Code. That accused is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Guelph on May 5.

On April 15, at approximately 12:30 p.m., a member of the Wellington County OPP initiated a commercial motor vehicle inspection of a commercial van and trailer on Wellington Road 7 in Guelph/Eramosa. As a result of the investigation, a 62-year-old driver from Rockwood has been charged with HTA offences, including an overweight vehicle - violating a permit 5700 and having no clear view to the rear.

On April 16, at approximately 2 p.m., a member of the Wellington County OPP stopped the driver of a white pickup truck on Anne Street in Harriston. As a result of the investigation, a 71-year-old driver from Harriston was charged with driving while under suspension, contrary to the HTA. The defendant is scheduled to appear in provincial offences court in Guelph on July 19.

On April 17, at approximately 8:30 a.m., a member of the Wellington County OPP initiated a commercial motor vehicle inspection of a commercial van and trailer on Belsyde Avenue East in Fergus. As a result of the investigation, a 72-year-old driver from Belwood and a Belwood business face HTA charges, including failing to surrender a completed daily inspection report and operating a commercial motor vehicle without a valid commercial vehicle operator's registration (CVOR) certificate. In total, six HTA offences were identified.

On April 17, around noon, a member of the Wellington County OPP stopped the driver of a grey sedan on Scotland Street in Fergus. As a result of the investigation, a 62-year-old driver from Centre Wellington was charged with driving while under suspension, driving a motor vehicle without a currently validated permit, using a plate not authorized for a vehicle and failing to notify change of address, contrary to the HTA. Further, the driver was charged with operating a motor vehicle without insurance, contrary to the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act (CAIA). The defendant is scheduled to appear in provincial offences court in Guelph on July 19.

On April 17, at approximately 4 p.m., a member of the Wellington County OPP initiated a commercial motor vehicle inspection of a commercial van on Wellington Road 7 in Pilkington. As a result of the investigation, an Arthur business faces HTA charges, including vehicle operating - failing to display inspection sticker of proof and failing to ensure daily inspection report is accurately completed. In total, seven HTA violations were identified. 

On April 18, at approximately 8 a.m., a member of the Wellington County OPP stopped the driver of a white station wagon on Wellington Road 18, Elora. As a result of the investigation, a 42-year-old vehicle owner from Fergus was charged with permitting a motor vehicle to be operated without insurance, contrary to the CAIA and driving a motor vehicle without validation on a plate, contrary to the HTA. The defendant is scheduled to appear in provincial offences court in Guelph on July 19.

On April 18, at approximately 1:30 p.m., a member of the Wellington County OPP stopped the driver of a black sedan on Elora Street South in Harriston. As a result of the investigation, a 34-year-old driver from Brockton was charged with driving while under suspension and driving a motor vehicle without a license, contrary to the HTA. Further, the driver was also charged with possessing unmarked cigarettes, contrary to the Tobacco Tax Act (TTA). The defendant is scheduled to appear in provincial offences court in Guelph on July 19.

On April 18, at approximately 10:30 p.m., a member of the Wellington County OPP stopped the driver of a red sport utility vehicle (SUV) on Gibbons Drive in Fergus. As a result of the investigation, a 52-year-old from Elora has been charged with operation while impaired - BAC (80 plus), contrary to the Criminal Code and with operating a motor vehicle without insurance, contrary to the CAIA. The accused is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Guelph on May 5.

On April 19, at approximately 11 a.m., a member of the Wellington County OPP stopped the driver of a grey sedan on Highway 6 in Wellington North. As a result of the investigation, a 50-year-old driver from Peterborough was charged with driving while under suspension, contrary to the HTA. The defendant is scheduled to appear in provincial offences court in Guelph on July 19.

On April 19, at approximately 4:30 p.m., a member of the Wellington County OPP stopped the driver of a red minivan on 5th Line in Minto. As a result of the investigation, a 34-year-old driver from Clifford was charged with driving while under suspension, contrary to the HTA. The defendant is scheduled to appear in provincial offences court in Guelph on July 19.

On April 19, at approximately 4:45 p.m., a member of the Wellington County OPP stopped the driver of a red pickup truck on Walker Street in Fergus. As a result of the investigation, a 43-year-old driver from Springfield was charged with driving while under suspension, driving a motor vehicle - failing to display two plates, driving a motor vehicle without a currently validated permit and failing to notify change of address, contrary to the HTA. The defendant is scheduled to appear in provincial offences court in Guelph on July 19.

On April 19, at approximately 8:15 p.m., a member of the Wellington County OPP stopped the driver of a red pickup truck on Union Street West in Fergus. As a result of the investigation, an 18-year-old driver from Fergus was charged with driving with a windshield coated - view obstructed, contrary to the HTA.

Anyone charged with operation while impaired- 80 pus (mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood) or failing to comply with the demand receives a 90-day administrative driver's licence suspension and a seven-day vehicle impoundment as per statute.

Anyone charged with driving and motor vehicle - performing a stunt receives a 14-day impoundment and a 30-day driver's licence suspension as per statute.
