Driver faces further charges in fatal August crash

A passenger in one of the vehicles was killed while two others suffered life-altering injuries in the Aug. 1 crash

Upon further investigation and based on information received from the Ontario Centre of Forensic Sciences, Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have laid further charges against a driver involved in a fatal collision near Elora in August, 2021.

In addition to the original charges, Ricardo Francisco Cruz Abrego, 24 years old of Kitchener, has been charged with operation (while impaired by alcohol and/or drug) causing death and two counts of operation (while impaired by alcohol and/or drug) cause bodily harm contrary to the Criminal Code. A 90-day Administrative Driver's Licence Suspension (A.D.L.S.) was initiated as per statute. The accused is scheduled to appear in the Ontario court of justice - Guelph on Oct. 10, 2021, to answer to the charges.

On Aug. 1, 2021, Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a collision where a coupe collided with a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) on Wellington Road 21, Pilkington. As a result of the collision, a passenger in the coupe was pronounced dead at scene and two other passengers sustained life-altering injuries.
