Five area drivers face speeding, impaired related charges

Four of them charged with stunt driving

Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has consolidated and streamlined notable traffic offences with a single weekly release.

On Dec. 1, 2023, a member of the Ontario Provincial Police - West Region Traffic Management and Enforcement (TIME) team was monitoring traffic on Sideroad 10, Centre Wellington. At approximately 8:30 a.m., a black pickup truck was observed travelling well above the posted 80km/hr speed limit. As a result of the investigation, a 39-year-old driver from Fergus has been charged with Drive Motor Vehicle - Perform Stunt - Excessive Speed, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) The defendant is scheduled to appear in provincial offences court - Guelph, on Jan. 24, 2024.

On Dec. 1, 2023, a member of the Ontario Provincial Police - West Region TIME team was monitoring traffic on the Halnon Expressway South, Guelph. At approximately 11 a.m., a blue sedan was observed travelling well above the posted 80km/hr speed limit. As a result of the investigation, a 24-year-old driver from Cambridge has been charged with Drive Motor Vehicle - Perform Stunt - Excessive Speed, contrary to the HTA. The defendant is scheduled to appear in provincial offences court - Guelph, on Jan. 24, 2024.

On Dec. 3, 2023 at approximately 9 a.m., Wellington County OPP stopped the drive of a silver sedan on Wellington Road 44, Guelph/Eramosa. As a result of the investigation, a 32-year-old from Brampton, has been charged with Operation while Impaired and Fail to Comply with Probation Order, contrary to the Criminal Code. Further, the driver was also charged with Possession of a Schedule I Substance - Heroin, contrary to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA). The accused is scheduled to appear in the Ontario court of justice - Guelph, on Dec. 19, 2023.

On Dec. 3, 2023 at approximately 9:30 a.m., Wellington County OPP responded to a traffic complaint on Wellington Road 39, Guelph/Eramosa. It was reported that a white mini van was observed driving erratically. As a result of the investigation, a 31-year-old from Fergus has been charged with Operation while Impaired contrary to the Criminal Code. The accused is scheduled to appear in the Ontario court of justice - Guelph, on Jan. 5, 2023.

On Dec. 3, 2023 at approximately 3:15 a.m., Wellington County OPP responded to a traffic complaint on Wellington Road 109, Wellington North. It was reported that a black Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) blue sedan was observed travelling well above the posted 80km/hr speed limit. As a result of the investigation, a 28-year-old driver from Arthur has been charged with Drive Motor Vehicle - Perform Stunt - Excessive Speed and Careless Driving, contrary to the HTA. The defendant is scheduled to appear in provincial offences court - Guelph, on March 6, 2024.

On Dec. 5, 2023, a member of the Wellington County OPP was monitoring traffic on the Halnon Expressway North, Guelph. At approximately 10:45 p.m., a grey sedan was observed travelling well above the posted 80km/hr speed limit. As a result of the investigation, a 23-year-old driver from Port Dover has been charged with Drive Motor Vehicle - Perform Stunt - Excessive Speed, contrary to the HTA. The defendant is scheduled to appear in provincial offences court - Guelph, on March 6, 2024.

Anyone charged with Operation while Impaired - BAC 80 Plus (mgs of alcohol in 100mL of blood) or Failing to Comply with Demand receives a 90-day administrative driver's licence suspension (ADLS) and a seven-day vehicle impoundment as per statute.

Anyone charged with Drive Motor Vehicle - Perform Stunt receives a 14-day impoundment and a 30-day driver's licence suspension as per statute.
