The Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police is looking for motivated citizens to participate in the Wellington County OPP Citizens Police Academy.

The academy is an opportunity for citizens to learn about policing in a way that very few get to experience without becoming a sworn member of a police service. Selected applicants will get exposure to many specific police related topics and duties including forensic analysis, canine handling, homicide investigations, court process, dispatching, and collision reconstruction. If you've wanted to know about clandestine labs, mental health as it effects policing or prisoner transportation this is your opportunity. You'll have the chance to tour the Fergus OPP detachment, learn about the Auxiliary program, hear from recruiting, and even get to see the techniques and equipment used to identify impaired drivers.

This series of interactive information sessions are presented by field experts and specialists that will share their passion for policing. Whatever the motivation a citizen may have for attending, the result will be a community member who better understands the challenges and responsibilities that the officers of the OPP face every day. The 10-week program is scheduled to begin March 6 and be held Wednesdays from 7 - 9:30 p.m. at the Fergus OPP detachment (371 Charles Allan Way, Fergus).

We are looking for community minded individuals, 18-years-old or over, who represent a wide range of demographics including age, vocation, motivation, and life experience. Applications can be picked up at any of the three Wellington County OPP offices: Rockwood, Fergus or Teviotdale. Submission deadline is Feb. 19 and must delivered in person to the Fergus OPP detachment. Valid photo identification must be presented upon application. A security check will also be used to determine a candidate's suitability.

For further information regarding the program please contact Administrator Carly McKeown at the Fergus OPP Detachment at [email protected] or 519-846-5930.
