Suspicious person call leads to discovery of stolen vehicle: OPP

Police say the accused was seen checking unlocked vehicles and had also committed a theft the day prior

MOUNT FOREST —  On Sept. 15, 2022, the Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a report of a theft at a business on King Street West, Mount Forest. Video footage of the incident was provided to officers, and the person involved was identified.

On Sept. 16, 2022 the Wellington County OPP responded to a report of a person entering a vehicle on Birmingham Street West, Mount Forest. Later, a second call was received reporting that a suspicious person appeared to be checking for unlocked vehicles on Durham Street West, Mount Forest. Officers arrived on scene and located the person in a vehicle that was later determined to be stolen.

As a result of the investigation, Skylar Gilbert, 27-years-old of Wellington North Township has been charged with the following:

  • CCC 334(b) Theft Under $5000
  • CCC 145 (4)(a) Fail to Comply with Undertaking
  • CCC 354(1)(a) Possession of Property Obtained by Crime over $5000

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice - Guelph, at a later date.
