CENTRE WELLINGTON – The Township of Centre Wellington says it has seen a rise in vandalism of planters across the community.

In a news release titled, "Vandalism of Beautification Efforts on the Rise," the township said that plants and flowers that have been potted and placed in downtowns and along the bridges in Fergus and Belwood have been pulled out, and thrown off the bridges, or plants have been removed from planters altogether, leaving staff struggling to replace and repair the plants in the community.

“The Township takes great pride in beautifying our downtowns,” Mayor Shawn Watters said. “To see that people are being reckless and destroying the planters and plants themselves is frustrating, to say the least."

Watters said the time, resources and commitment that staff puts into creating the planters, only to see them damaged, is concerning.

"We want to continue our contributions of beautifying our downtowns and hope we can work together to stop this vandalism from happening in our beautiful community,” Watters said.

The OPP urges anyone with information about the vandalism of plants and planters to call 1-888-310-1122.
