With climate change and emissions in the news a lot lately, the term Net Zero often comes up. Many industries have been working towards better energy efficiency and Net Zero solutions, including local homebuilder WrightHaven Homes.

With the use of innovative building techniques and materials, WrightHaven Homes is able to build houses that are considered Net Zero, which means that they produce as much energy, if not more, than they consume. According to Steven Wright, President of WrightHaven Homes, the high efficiency of Net Zero homes comes from a combination of factors including cutting-edge materials and building techniques.

“The major difference is in the building envelope of a Net Zero home. The products we use must be highly efficient in R-value as well as at sealing any air leakage through cracks and gaps. In a traditional home, problem areas include doors, windows, attic, foundation, and the exterior walls,” explains Steven. “With a Net Zero home, we use specific products, materials, and techniques to ensure that these areas are highly energy efficient.”

Steven continues, “For example, ZIP system sheathing and tape allows us to control the exterior wall envelope and protect the building from water, air, and vapour. It is a streamlined structural system that offers integrated protection and a simple, fast installation.”

The Importance of Insulation

One of the most important characteristics of a Wrighthaven Net Zero home is superior insulation. On top of additional insulation in exterior walls and ceilings, WrightHaven’s Net Zero homes are also insulated under their foundations to help regulate interior temperatures. Generally, Net Zero homes are approximately 66% better insulated than a conventional home.

Net Zero and Extremely Comfortable

These innovative materials not only increase the efficiency of homes, but they also create an incredibly comfortable living space. Air quality, temperature regulation, and even noise reduction are all exceptional in Net Zero homes. This makes the energy savings even sweeter.

“Net Zero homeowners have said that, on top of being able to maintain their utility bills to an all-time low, they love the comfort and quiet in their new homes,” says Steven. “Our clients also feel secure in the fact that their home will protect them from future increases in energy prices.”
