Many people who purchase Net Zero homes are hoping to reduce their carbon footprint as well as their energy costs. While these are both huge benefits of these innovative home designs, there are a few unexpected perks of living in a carbon neutral home.

According to Steven Wright, President of Wrighthaven Homes, many of their clients have found that their Net Zero homes are not just more environmentally conscious and save them money on energy bills, but they also have the added benefits of being quieter, have better indoor air quality, and more comfortable indoor air temperatures.

“Clients tell us all the time that their allergies have subsided and they are enjoying a new level of peace and quiet since moving into their new Net Zero homes,” says Steven.

Net Zero Offers Exceptional Comfort

The same elements that reduce the environmental footprint of a home also contribute to other desirable factors. The added attention to high-efficiency insulation, triple-pane low solar glass windows, and high-quality, energy efficient heating and cooling equipment cause Net Zero homes to stay at even temperatures throughout the year. These same factors contribute to a much quieter home, as well. Outside noise is kept out and the mechanical system while running consistently is much quieter than a typical furnace and fan system of code-built homes.

Since these homes are sealed tight in order to maintain an energy efficient heating and cooling system, they also require state-of-the-art filtered fresh air systems. These systems have the added benefit of reducing allergens like dust, pollen, and outdoor air pollution within the home. In addition, they exchange humidity making homes indoor air humidity consistent and within recommended humidity levels all year around.

“We built our first green home for a family with a chronically ill child,” says Steven. “After moving in, the family found the improved air quality of the home played a significant role in improving the health of their child. It was all the proof I needed to continue on this healthy, science-based approach to homebuilding.”

Net Zero Neighbourhoods Have a Lot to Offer

Not only do Net Zero homes themselves have many benefits, but they are often built in neighbourhoods that support a more eco-friendy lifestyle. Net Zero neighbourhoods are becoming more common and they integrate environmentally conscious features like naturalized green spaces and enhanced trails for biking and walking.

“Our subdivision in Elora incorporates a large, fully landscaped environmental pond that serves to manage storm water. It is also the first one in the municipality to have new multi-use pathways connecting it to the added park, trail system, and links to downtown,” explains Steven.
